The Seaford Bonfire Society Story
Seaford Bonfire Society re-formed in 2010 with it’s first display in October 2011. Hugely successful the society continues to grow and this year will be celebrating its 7th year with a spectacular procession, bonfire and firework display.
As well as putting on a show to remember for Seaford town each year the members attend bonfire processions in towns and villages throughout Sussex between September and November. These evenings are great fun, meeting members of other societies and seeing the different traditions.
The display in 2013 set a very high standard. A ghost ship paraded through the town, accompanied by an atmospheric full moon. Upon its arrival at the fire site the ship did battle with the pirate galleon, manned by a scurvy crew made up of guys from the annual school ‘best guy’ competition. Other years have seen an impressive Saxon longboat and a huge treasure chest being carried through the town. In 2016 crowds witnessed the gruesome sight of Guy Fawkes being carried in a cart to the gallows accompanied by the decapitated heads of his fellow conspirators. Each year these impressive tableaux are created by members of the Society and are kept secret until the Bonfire Night.
The 2018 Bonfire display and parade will be held on 20th October and preparations are already under way. We are planning, fundraising and organising meetings to ensure the Society puts on a spectacle the town of Seaford can be proud of.
None of this would be possible without the incredible support of our sponsors. Local residents, other organisations, local businesses, Seaford Town Council and of course our members. Bonfire is a long standing Sussex tradition and Seaford is one of the oldest societies.
As with most things we constantly strive to surpass the previous year’s event and are always on the look out for new members to help achieve bigger and better: the more ‘hands on deck’ the more ambitious we can be!
Why not come along to one of our meetings on the first Thursday of the month at the White Lion Hotel, Seaford? Or talk to our members at one of the many fundraising events in Seaford where we have our stall.
Long may Seaford Bonfire Society continue
